Our Lady of Victory School opened in September 1963 with one hundred twenty (120) students in grade six. Grades seven and eight were added in the next two years. Father Thomas J. McMahon was the pastor of the parish and it was under his direction that the school was built. Four Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk staffed the school when it opened. Over the years, many dedicated lay men and women have been a part of the school faculty. One Ursuline Sister is on staff at present. Two classes of grade nine were added to the school in 1975 to accommodate the changes taking place in the public school system at that time. Grade nine was phased out in 1983 when the public school again restructured. A decision to add grade five was made in September 1983 due to a drop in enrollment. A study to determine the direction the school should take was carried out. Consultation with the Archdiocesan Office of Catholic Schools brought about a plan to completely restructure the school from a middle school to an elementary school. The opening of school in September 1984 successfully completed the transition to an elementary school. The school year of 1984-85 brought “new life” for the school, as well as the parish. The doors opened in September to welcome a kindergarten class and a first grade class. The Parish Center basement was remodeled to accommodate a pre-kindergarten program for children who were three and four. It was felt that this program would be a feeder to the kindergarten program. The program began as an independent program, but was brought under the guidelines of the school in 1988. Grades two and three were added as the original first grade moved on. The fourth grade was added in 1987, completing the transition of Our Lady of Victory to an elementary school. In 1991, the Parish Center was again remodeled and the pre-kindergarten program took over part of the first floor of the building. In 2002 our pre-k program merged with St. John Vianney’s pre-k program and became known as Pre-K on the Hill at our Lady of Victory under the direction of Mrs. Janet DiPalma. In 2005 the pre-k was incorporated into the main building making the school’s program a true pre-k through eight._ Based on interviews with parents and through organizational meetings held with pre-k parents during the 1997-1998 school year, the pastor and principal formulated the plan to change the half-day session kindergarten program into an all day program beginning with the 1998-1999 school year. This successful program has become a strong incentive for parents to enroll their child(ren ) in Our Lady of Victory School. Project Love, the after-school program, has been in operation for several years and is a huge success. The program provides after school care for families at a reasonable cost. A network computer laboratory was added in 1998. The room contains thirty computers. A computer teacher, as well as their homeroom teacher, instructs classes. Students from kindergarten through grade eight receive instruction in the use of computers. This computer lab was totally brought up to date the summer of 2002 with the addition of new computers and flat screen monitors. The pastor and parishioners of Our Lady of Victory Parish are dedicated to the support of Catholic education. They understand that Catholic education has a vital place in today’s society. Their support as well as the support from parents, makes it possible for Our Lady of Victory to go forth into the New Millennium.
